Statutory Sick Leave Update: Self-certification temporarily extended to 28 days
Self-certification for sickness absence has been, until recently, capped at the first seven days. Due to the increased pressure on GPs, employees can now self-certify for 28 days.
GPs are finding themselves under increasing strain, with the focus on providing emergency care and delivering the coronavirus booster programme.
The new guidance now means that employees will no longer be required to provide their employer with a fit note for the first 28 days of absence
The changes came into effect on 17 December, but they apply to absences which began on or after 10 December 2021, up to and including absences which begin on or before 26 January 2022. The self-certification period will then revert to seven days for absences beginning on or after 27 January 2022.
